Alpaca Care

Stocking Rates and Feeding

Stocking rates for Alpacas vary, as a general rule no more than 6 should be kept per acre. Their diet consists of grass and hay for roughage, Hay should be available at all times. Pregnant and lactating females also require a vitamin and mineral supplement which is fed in pellet form on a daily basis.

Housing and Fencing

Here at Three Oaks we use sheep mesh with twin plain wire. Alpacas tend not to try escaping as they do not like to be separated from the rest of the herd. Mature, intact males must be kept in a separate enclosure to the females, they will attempt to get to females if fencing is inadequate. A mature hedge is sufficient shelter for less exposed areas, however a field shelter is advisable especially in exposed areas to provide shade and shelter from driving rain.

Husbandry

Alpacas have soft, padded feet with toe nails. The nails should be trimmed 3-4 times a year depending on the ground on which they are kept.
Vaccinations and worming for Alpacas is a twice yearly requirement to protect them against worms and clostridia diseases.

Shearing is usually carried out once a year from May onwards. If an animal is to be shown it is usual for them to be left until the end of the show season in September. Shearing in September means the fleece will be at its prime for the following show season.
